Best piezo pickups for cello9/21/2023 ![]() Piezo is considered ultra-high impedance, with output impedances on the order of MegOhms. The advice given earlier about impedance mismatch is correct, although it's usually not a problem. You can take my advise or not, but I know what I'm talking about. In fact, the company I work for invented piezo ceramic 60 or so years ago. I'm a transducer design engineer for a company that manufacturers piezo. and preferably over a fairly short cable. You want your piezo pickup signal to hit a very high impedance input as the first thing it "sees". DOD doesn't list the specs online, but it's likely to have a low-impedance input for that application. It's an electric guitar effect pedal, designed to sit somewhere in the middle of a pedal chain, or in the FX loop of a guitar amp. ![]() That DOD graphic EQ pedal might work for some types of active pickups, but I wouldn't recommend it for a passive piezo pickup, if you're looking for the best sound quality. I think the PADI is probably the best bang-for-buck for this kind of thing, unless you need the added features of higher-end gear. A good DI (direct box) would do the same thing, but the PADI has some additional EQ you might find useful for tone-shaping and feedback control. If you use a short cable (6 to 10 feet) into something like the PADI that has a high impedance (buffering) input, I think you'll hear an immediate improvement in tone without adding any EQ at all. It reduces bass, makes the mids sound thin and the highs "zingy" and harsh. Impedance mismatch kills the tone of a passive piezo pickup. Also, most mixer inputs are low impedance. Without proper impedance matching, it will be "loaded down" with capacitance effects by the length of cable to your amp or PA. ![]() I just think I can tweak it to sound a bit better)The main reason to use something like the LR Baggs is that you're using a passive piezo pickup (as far as I can tell). The upside is that the BB is pretty hot for a piezo, volume is not a problem, it's just the tone (keeping in mind the limitations of using a soundboard pickup on a mediocre instrument yadda, yadda, yadda. ![]() Thanks for the warning, Ray, I don't think my P.A. ![]()
